For the design and construction of our taps we have chosen to use exclusively AISI 316 stainless steel, a material that has relevant technical characteristics, such as durability and resistance to corrosion and heat.

As we said in the article on the best bathroom taps, steel is a hygienic and biologically neutral material, as well as totally non-toxic, antibacterial, ecological, recyclable and easy to clean.

The question now arises: how to distinguish it from other types of stainless steel?

How is AISI 316 stainless steel composed?

Inox and stainless steel are synonymous. The word stainless is a term that is currently given to all those metals that have a high chromium content, with a percentage that exceeds 11%. This material, specifically, is an alloy composed of Iron, Chrome and Carbon that gives steel the important property of not rusting when exposed to air and water.

The advantage? The versatility. This type of steel can be used for a wide variety of purposes, both for the interior of a house and for the exterior.

What is the difference between 304 and 316 steel?

At first sight, distinguishing these two types may seem very difficult because, on the surface, they are incredibly similar in composition. In fact, both are composed mostly of nickel and chromium: 304 steel contains more chromium, 316 more nickel.

However, the most important difference between these two variants is the increased presence of molybdenum in 316 steel. This material, thanks to its properties, makes this type of steel much more resistant to corrosion and wear, especially when exposed to chemicals or water, even if containing salt or chlorine. In fact, one of the fields of use in which 316 stainless steel is used is the marine industry, where it is used in the production of different types of accessories, but also kitchens and sinks located on board.

Why should you use AISI 316 steel?

There are many reasons to use 316 stainless steel when choosing your tap or accessories. As already mentioned, the first thing that is striking about this material is its very high resistance to corrosion and environmental influences while also reducing the cost of maintenance.

Other important reasons that can guide the choice are:

  • it is highly hygienic, therefore also suitable for the processing of the food industry
  • it does not alter the color, taste and smell of the one with which it comes into contact

How to recognize 316 stainless steel? The method of magnetic testing.

The magnetic test method is one of the simplest and most common tests that is carried out when it is necessary to recognize a metal, as in the case of stainless steel, although unfortunately, it is not always reliable. It is certain, however, that given the particular composition of 316 stainless steel, the magnet will definitely have a low or no magnetic attraction.

How does it work?
By taking a simple magnet, laying it on the surface and evaluating the type of reaction, it is possible to determine the quality of the material.

If the material is of excellent quality and has not been contaminated by external processes, the magnet will certainly not stick to the surface of the metal, or will have a low magnetism. Conversely, if the magnet remains strongly attracted, the metal is of poor quality, therefore, in all probability it is in the presence of iron or a non stainless steel 316.
