The advantages of satin-finish steel taps

Brushed stainless steel and satin-finished stainless steel are different. The “brushed steel” finish is even more different, as it is commercially used with products made from other metal alloys, such as brass. However, all these finishes are often confused and perceived by the user as similar, even though they are actually very different. In this article, we will examine the differences and similarities between brushed and satin-finished stainless steel, comparing them with other metals, typically brass, processed with a brushed finish, and trying to identify the strengths and weaknesses of each.

Brushed stainless steel, regular lines and extraordinary shine

The real brushed 316L stainless steel has a unique shine, mainly due to the fine, clean and regular surface scratches. The metal is first treated with a highly abrasive cloth that creates shallow, very shiny lines. These lines are then softened with lower-grade Scotch Brite abrasive wheels. This final treatment mattifies the surface and makes it softer to the touch.

The result of this multi-stage treatment is light reflections from the linear scratches on the matt surface, creating a unique effect that cannot be replicated on other metals. This distinctive and recognisable appearance is often chosen for decorative and design objects.

Satin-finished stainless steel, irregular and recognisable features

The satin stainless steel finish is obtained in a different way than brushed stainless steel. Instead of scratching the surface with medium-depth lines, the surface is polished to a very high degree, generally called “mirror”.

The surface is then treated with a wheel known as a “ventilated” wheel, which has a very low degree of abrasiveness and is capable of creating irregular micro-scratches that slightly matt the shiny surface.

This type of finish is generally used in more extreme conditions, such as outdoors or wellness centres, due to its ability to repel impurities contained in the air. It is another type of finish that is less shiny but very bright, elegant and discreet.

Brass with a “brushed steel” finish: more disadvantages than advantages

Brushed or satin stainless steel finishes are something else entirely, obtained through special industrial processes on metals that have nothing to do with stainless steel. In this case, the aim is to achieve a “brushed stainless steel” or “satin” effect on alloys such as brass, proving that, in terms of design, steel has a look that is highly sought after by architects and designers.

However, brass has a very different finish compared to stainless steel. The industrial process that makes it similar to steel involves brushing the nickel-plated surface and then protecting it with hypo-sodic paint to prevent the surface from being affected by moisture.

If you want a brushed or satin finish, there is only one choice: stainless steel.

As we have seen, stainless steel always offers enormous advantages in the production of taps. This is also true for special finishes, such as brushed or satin. In addition to giving taps a more refined and elegant appearance, it guarantees superior durability over time. What’s more, it never loses its characteristic shine.

Moreover, compared to brass, brushed or satin-finished stainless steel has an incomparable advantage in hiding fingerprints, has a warmer tone and feels unmatched in terms of robustness and reliability.

For this reason, Super Inox has made a clear choice: stainless steel and quality products with a stylish design that will satisfy both architects and those who, quite naturally, want to purchase a product that will stand the test of time.
