AISI 316: how can it be distinguished from other types of stainless steel?

For the design and manufacture of our taps, we have chosen to use only AISI 316 stainless steel, a material with significant technical characteristics, such as durability and resistance to corrosion and heat.

As we already mentioned in our article on the best bathroom taps, steel is a hygienic and biologically neutral material, as well as being completely non-toxic, antibacterial, eco-friendly, recyclable and easy to clean.

The question now arises: how can it be distinguished from other types of stainless steel?

What is the composition of AISI 316 stainless steel?

The word stainless is a term commonly used to refer to all metals with a high chromium content, exceeding 11%. Specifically, this material is an alloy composed of iron, chromium and carbon, which gives steel the important property of not rusting when exposed to air and water.

The advantage? Versatility. This type of steel can be used for a wide variety of purposes, both indoors and outdoors.

What is the difference between 304 and 316 steel?

At first glance, distinguishing between these two types may seem very difficult because, on the surface, they are incredibly similar in composition. In fact, both are composed mainly of nickel and chromium: 304 steel contains more chromium, while 316 contains more nickel.

However, the most important difference between these two variants is the higher molybdenum content in 316 steel. Thanks to its properties, this material makes this type of steel much more resistant to corrosion and wear, especially when exposed to chemicals or water, even if it contains salt or chlorine. In fact, one of the fields of application in which 316 stainless steel is used is the nautical sector, where it is used in the manufacture of various types of accessories, as well as kitchens and sinks on board.

Why should you use AISI 316 steel?

There are numerous reasons to choose 316 stainless steel for your tap or accessories. As already mentioned, the first thing that strikes you about this material is its extremely high resistance to corrosion and external agents, which also reduces maintenance costs.

Other very important factors that may influence your choice are:

  • It is highly hygienic, therefore also suitable for use in the food industry.
  • does not alter the colour, flavour or smell of whatever it comes into contact with

How to recognise 316 stainless steel? The magnetic test method.

The magnetic test is one of the simplest and most common tests used to identify a metal, such as stainless steel, although unfortunately it is not always reliable. However, given the particular composition of 316 stainless steel, it is certain that the magnet will have little or no magnetic attraction.

How does it work?
By taking a simple magnet, placing it on the surface and assessing the type of reaction, it is possible to determine the quality of the material in broad terms.

If the material is of excellent quality and has not been contaminated by external processing, the magnet will definitely not stick to the metal surface, or will have low magnetism. Conversely, if the magnet remains strongly attracted, the metal is of poor quality, so it is most likely iron or non-316 stainless steel.
